The main character, Lars (played by Ryan Gosling), is a young, awkward guy with social anxieties and challenges connecting with people. That is, until he decides to get a girlfriend, but not just any girlfriend – a life-sized blow-up doll he names Bianca. It’s audacious, really, to juxtapose mental illness and sex toys. But audacity pays off in this one.
